Applying
to the 2008 Summer Academy in International Commercial Arbitration
ELIGIBILITY
The program welcomes applications from law students
at any United States law school approved by the American Bar Association or by
the accreditation agency of the state in which it is located. Program size is
limited, so participants are encouraged to apply early. Participation is
contingent upon acceptance into the program.
CREDIT
Students who complete the entire program, including
a successful result on each of the two examinations administered at the end of
the Academy, will receive six hours of academic credit, three for each of the
two seminars which are offered by the Summer Academy. Georgia State University will be responsible for awarding credit for all
students enrolled in the program. Students from schools other than the College
of Law at Georgia State University should consult their individual departments
and/or home institutions to determine if the course fulfills requirements for
their program of study. Students from such other institutions should follow
their home schools' regulations
concerning transfer credits.
COST
Tuition and program costs for the 2008 year will total approximately $4,797.
The cost of the program (hotel, ground program, ground transportation,
excursions, and many meals) is $2,600.
Additionally, in-state tuition rates ($2,112) are available to all
participants whether resident in Georgia or not.

OTHER EXPENSES:
Tuition fees
In Summer Semester 2008, it is estimated that
Georgia State University will assess a per hour tuition cost of $353, based on
in-state tuition rates. The
six-hour program of the Summer Academy in International Commercial Arbitration
will therefore entail a tuition payment to Georgia State University in the
total amount of $2,112. In addition,
the University will assess a $50 Technology Fee payable by each of the students
participating in the Summer Academy.
Typically, a GSU student participating in the Summer Academy will
therefore pay $2,162 for tuition.
Under a special arrangement with the Georgia Board
of Regents, students who are not residents of the State of Georgia will be
permitted to enroll in the Summer Academy at in-state tuition rates, subject
only to an additional administrative cost of $250. Typically, a non-GSU student participating in the Summer
Academy will therefore pay $2,412 for tuition.
Other personal costs
An individual's
personal tastes and preferences will, of course, pretty much determine what
that individual will spend for food, entertainment, and other elective
expenditures during the period of the Summer Academy, making generalizations in
this respect somewhat risky.
Experience has shown, however, that a typical student will require
something in the range of $20-35 per day for meals, transportation, and other basic
personal costs while participating in the program. It is not unusual for a student participant to elect to
remain at off-site program venues (Milan, Munich, or Venice) after the
conclusion of formal activities in those cities, especially when these appear
in the program schedule on a Friday which is very often the case. In that event, the student assumes the
personal costs of hotel accommodations in that city and transportation expenses
back to Linz at the end of the weekend.
Tuition and fees for all Summer Academy participants
should be paid to Georgia State University through Ms Cindy Perry, Summer
Academy in International Commercial Arbitration Program Assistant, Georgia
State University College of Law, P.O. Box 4037, Atlanta, GA 30302-4037.
Payment of program costs are due as follows:
January 15, 2008: $800, which includes a $500 nonrefundable deposit
due in order to reserve your space in the program, to be credited toward the
program fee
April 1, 2008, the
balance of the program fee and tuition in full.
Georgia State University students receiving financial aid will be charged
program tuition directly from their award monies.
It is the responsibility of ALL students to
pay the balance of all fees by the April 1, 2008 deadline.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID
Most institutions will allow students to apply for
financial aid to help fund summer foreign study. Students should consult their
home institution's individual financial
aid office to determine whether this is possible and to apply in time to secure
adequate funding. In addition, some institutions offer scholarships to help
fund foreign study and students should explore this possibility as well.
For Georgia State University students, a number of scholarships for study abroad
are available through the State of Georgia, including the International
Education Fee (IEF) Study Abroad Scholarship and the Board of Regents Study
Abroad Scholarship. For students in the University System of Georgia, financial
aid and the HOPE scholarship may also be used to pay for study abroad tuition.
For additional information, contact the Georgia State University Office of
International Affairs at 404-463-9073 or see http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwoia/StudyAbroad/scholarships.htm.
Georgia State University law
students may receive financial aid and should contact Benita Matthews, at bmatthews@gsu.edu or by
telephone at 404-651-2675.
RESPONSIBILITY
AND LIABILITY
Health and
travel insurance, intended to supplement students' primary health insurance coverage, is provided to all
participants through the University System of Georgia study-abroad programs and
is included in the program fee. Georgia State University is not
responsible for damage to or loss of personal property or for personal injury
or accident involving a participant of the Summer Academy in International
Commercial Arbitration. However, Program faculty will make every effort to
assist and aid students with any problems they encounter while studying abroad
and will attempt to notify study abroad office representatives and participants' family members in the unlikely event of
an emergency or crisis situation. Participants must have a valid U.S. passport
that will not expire within six months of the anticipated date of return to the
United States and that has sufficient blank pages for visa stamps.
Each
participant must, prior to final acceptance as a participant in the 2008 Summer
Academy, fill out and submit to the program administration a certificate of
good health (Physician's Certificate),
Waiver of Liability/ Indemnification form and a Participant Data sheet (with
emergency contact information).
